Comedian Ahmed Ahmed’s joke about Muslims at the Off The Hook Comedy Club in Naples, Fla., on Saturday scared someone in the crowd who later called the Collier County Sheriff’s Department to report him.
“Clap if you’re from the Middle East,” Ahmed said, according to clip shared on the club’s Facebook page. “All right. We got a handful of us in here, nice. But, hey, it only takes one of us — to tell a joke.”
The man who called police claimed the comedian also joked about beginning a terrorist cell.
“I don’t think that was right,” the man said, according to audio of the call. “It really bothered me. … Is that something that should not be said?”
“I just thought it was terrible. My wife and I looked at each other and we felt very uncomfortable,” he said.
The man told the dispatcher he was afraid the comedian would make a similar joke at Sunday’s performance.
Police went to the club Sunday to speak with Ahmed before his set.
“I don’t know if it’s fear, racism, ignorance, or Islamophobia, or whatever you want to call it,” Ahmed said in response, according to a local NBC affiliate. “It’s unfortunate that somebody was very adamant about making a point to make a 911 call.”
“The cops were even like ‘WTF,’” he tweeted.
This happened to me last night @OTHComedyClub in Naples, Florida! An audience member called 9-11 on me because “they feared for their lives” over a joke I told on stage. That’s never happened to me or any comedian I believe. Fucking crazy man. The cops were even like “WTF”? 🤦🏻♂️👮🏻♂️ pic.twitter.com/hQezwJPXhw
